Horrible hard-drive! Amazon should not stock this item! It’s a disgrace to Amazon’s name! Problem started the minute I finished installing the operating system. I can’t even watch a smooth Youtube video without it constantly spinning up and down. The video will stop and lag when the drive actually stops dead with clicking sounds before spinning up again! Ridiculous! It’s so loud to the point that I feel like there is an added fan inside of my Macbook! I trusted WD, not anymore! I wasted all those time installing the new system!

  • Another well behaved drive from WD. I congratulate them on their consistent quality. The drive replaces a loud, power sucking POS drive from Seagate. Thanks Dell for sticking me with an inferior product. You deserve your sales plunge.

Update 12-Jan-2010: Drive failed after 57 days. I’M SO DONE WITH UNRELIABLE NOTEBOOK HARD DRIVES. FROM NOW ON, IT’S SSDs ONLY.

Update 3-Jun-2010: In a way, I’m lucky I bought a failed drive from WD. It motivated me to equip all my notebooks with SSDs. They are all much, much faster than with a HDD. They’re quieter, never need defragmenting, and most important of all — totally reliable. If you’re ok with the risk of a disk crash at a worst case moment, if you don’t need fast speed, then there’s no need to buy an SSD. You don’t have to pay more than 2/GB for an SSD. The price is steadily dropping. Do some research. You won’t be disappointed. Once you go SSD, you’ll never go back.

  • This is an economical, high capacity, average performance hard drive. A high performance notebook drive would typically be 7200 RPM, 16MB buffer. This drive can be turned into an external drive for backups etc by simply purchasing an external 2.5″ case such as Acomdata Tango 2.5-Inch USB 2.0 eSATA Portable Enclosure for SATA Hard Drive TNGXXXUSE-RED (Red) or you can put your existing notebook hard drive in the 2.5″ enclosure and use that as an external drive with the WD6400BEVT as your new main notebook drive. If you are planning on swapping out your main notebook drive, be sure to search for Acronis Migrate Easy software. It’s free (trial use) and transfers your entire operating system, applications, and data to the new drive without any problems. Check it out!
