I ordered this item for the 18.4 inch screen because of my poor eyesight. Unfortunately this system apparent has only 2 possible video resolutions the its “native mode”, which makes characters much too small for me to read anything on the screen, and the 800 by 600 mode. So the wide screen is useless to me. Apparently J & R will not accept the return of a computer after setup has been run, so I’m stuck with it. It may be of some use as a second computer if it is compatible with my 30 inch monitor, but not as a laptop. It may be a good laptop at a good price, but check the specs carefully to know what you are ordering.

  • just got this one today in the mail. first, if you see Beach Camera selling this…they are the same company as [...], and [...] has this Toshiba for under $[...]. second, all the reviews are correct regarding the buttons on the left of the keyboard. the very first time i used the keyboard on google, my left hand pushed the buttons, and we got the BEEP. so, my first google search was to find the easiest way to disable those buttons. took a few minutes, but it’s there. solved. also, there is NO backlit keyboard as you should know by now. in a few days i will have my solution here. i went with the red light and another one that is a blue light usb lights from logiix sold here at amazon. i wanted my keyboard to have some personality at night..but you will need some light at night. solved.

all in all, i haven’t had this machine very long, but it is a beast. btw putting it on your lap is not a problem at all…yeah it’s a little heavy, but are we made of toothpicks or something? i got used to it in a few moments. solved

so yeah, if ya like the specs, the size, the brand, etc…i cannot fathom another laptop like this for around the $[...] price range and BRAND NEW. come on now. this is a great deal.

The machine has impressively HUGE screen, and the screen is impressively crisp and bright.

I hesitated because of cpu, but it turns out that the speed is quite enough for me since I don’t run any programs which ask for many things. I’m sure 90% of users will agree about the speed.

I’m trying to turn the machine into Linux or XP, I simply cannot bear with this win 7. It is premium version, so way better than basic. But win 7 is just another Vista in different disguise. Many of softwares won’t work and it took a while to find out that the problems are from OS.

Anyway, the machine itself is amazing. Now it became one of my family treasure.

I really was not sure how large it would be, until it arrived. HUGE! I needed a large laptop for all of my media editing and movie watching. Here are some of my opinions about this laptop:

    1. As others have stated, the touch sensitive keys on the left sometimes interfere with typing. When I’m on the road, I constantly press one of the keys by mistake. This is something I’m going to have to work on. I don’t have this problem at home because I use a wireless mouse and keyboard. Perhaps next time, Toshiba can move those things above the keyboard, between the speakers (plenty of room).

    2. I was able to install all but 1 of my applications from my Windows XP laptop. Here are some of the larger applications that I was able to install:

    a. Roxio 2010

    b. ZoneAlarm 9.1

    c. ITunes

    d. Comic Book Creator 2

    e. MS Office 2007

    f. MS Project 2003

    g. Adobe Visual Communicator 3

    h. Adobe CS2 Premium (when you are asked for the path to use for installing, you must use (without the quotes) “C:progra~2adobe”. If you don’t, you will get activation errors and others

    later)

    i. Adobe CS3 Dreamweaver

    j. Adobe CS4

    k. MacDrive 8

    l. Business Plan Pro 2005, Marketing Plan Pro 2003, Quicken Legal Business Pro 2007

    m. Camtasia Studio 5 (then 6), Snagit 9

    n. VLC (VideoLan)

    o. DivX

    p. Adobe Captivate 4

    q. FlashPaper 2 (could not install this because it was incompatible)

    r. FireFox Browser

    3. One thing though that you should about this laptop: It does not come with any Setup Disks to use for restoring a broken system. It also does not come with a paper copy of the User Manual. Everything is on the laptop. Everything you need is located at “START –> All Programs –> My Toshiba”

I AM NOT A COMOUTER PRO. BUT THIS COMPUTER IS A VERY GOOD BUY CONSIDERING THE PRICE AND THE BIG SCREEN. YOU WON’T GO WRONG WITH IT.
