I’m glad I ignored all other reviews and rolled the dice anyway. I picked it up for next to nothing as an open box return. Their garbage was my treasure. Yes it does take a minute or two to initialize, who cares. Once it is ready, it does exactly what I want it to do: display artist, song, album, album art on the TV. The delay between song starting and album art displaying is only a few seconds. There is no interruption to the song while waiting for the art to display. There’s an initializing icon indicating art is downloading so you know what is happening. This is exactly what I would expect. This is exactly how car stereos perform when displaying album art also. It displays album art for all of my songs, doesn’t matter if they came from CD or iTunes. It doesn’t display art for my 4th generation nano but it clearly indicates in the manual this is a problem with the 4th generation. I haven’t played with all of the features yet, but I’m impressed thus far. Menus seem reasonable to navigate to me. The battery in the remote was dead, but once I replaced it, it has been very responsive. I’m still on the 1.0.0 firmware and haven’t upgraded yet, but I wonder if I really need to.
If you’re like me and you toiled over these reviews for this unit vs the Deluxe vs. the Navdock, trying to weigh all of the negatives, hesitate no more to try this one. Maybe I’m just lucky, but mine works great. Depends what you want out of it I guess. I suspect once I try the catalogue feature with the art, I’m really going to be happy. One of the best purchases I’ve made in some time.

SO FAR NOT SO GOOD
EASY TO HOOKUP, BUT WHEN I CHECKED OFF OPTION FOR HD, EVERYTHING FROZE
I HAVE DISCONNECTED AND TRIED TO RESTART BUT NO CONTROL
SO AS OF NOW I HAVE NOTHING BUT AN EXPENSIVE CHARGING STATION

I have to be honest. I had a lot of doubts to get this stuff after reading all the reviews previously posted here. But maybe I come to be a compulsive buyer and got if after all. Well, it turned out that it’s only matter of connecting the thing properly and letting it do its work as crearly stated on the manual. This iPod dock is what I expected it would be. The quality of music is great, and so is the video. I realised that the HDMI cable does improve the quality of the image compared with other docks without the regular AV connection. I haven’t tried the HD image yet but I have no reason to thing it will not work fine.
Why four stars instead of five? Because it takes about 5 minutes to start after you place your iPod on the dock before it starts working, but its only matter of being patient. I’d rather have it work immediately. I still must admit that with a 160 GB iPod almost full with TV shows, films and music I could be asking for a lot. The remote control works just fine, so I don’t know what the other reviews refer to when they say it doesn’t work. Maybe I just got lucky.
If you are still hesitant as I was, well, this is my advise: get the stuff.

Ok, when this thing is working it is great. Navigation is easy and very convenient to use from a couch potato position. Video display is excellent on my HD TV. Unfortunately…
if you want a device that you can just plug your iPod into and immediately listen to music, this ain’t it. Every single time I connect my iPod, I have to wait at least 10 minutes before it is usable. It actually takes that long to load my iPod. I don’t know if this is because I have 11,000 songs on my iPod, but this is unacceptable because it means that by the time this device is ready my mood may already be ruined. If I undock it for just a second it starts the initialization process all over again, making me wait what seems like forever just to play my music. Why not just leave it docked all the time? I have found that if I leave the iPod in it for an hour or more, it will lock up when I go to use it again and I have to unfreeze my iPod using the Menu + Center Button reset. Then dock it again and start waiting all over again. From all my research about this device, I have discovered that this is, unbelievably, how it was designed to work. It makes no sense to me. If I plug my iPod into my Alpine car stereo, I can instantaneously browse my entire 11,000 song library without waiting for a ridiculously long ‘initialization’. Why can’t DLO manage this? It’s rather disappointing because otherwise, the interface and quality of playback are excellent.

I bought this to improve the sound quality of the ipod. I ran this via an optical cable to my Onkyo AVR and the sound was a major improvement over the internal ipod DAC. I do not have it hooked up to the video part. I would strongly recommend for people wanting to get pure digital signal and bypass the ipod converter. Huge improvement of sound and very easy to plug and play!!!
